– San Antonio Zoo is thrilled to announce a transformational $3 million gift from philanthropist and zoo board member Susan Naylor. In honor of her exceptional support and gift, the zoo's newly expanded savanna habitat will proudly carry her name as the Naylor Savanna. The grand opening event will take place on Friday, October 4, at 10:00 a.m., and the public is warmly invited to join this momentous occasion. The Naylor Savanna will boast twice the amount of space for giraffes and rhinos. Other savanna species, such as zebras, ostriches, sitatunga, and more, will have three times the space, with access to roam between the expanded giraffe and rhino habitats, which were previously three separate habitats.
The Naylor Savanna will feature an all-new giraffe barn designed for optimal viewing even when these gentle giants choose to be indoors. The barn will feature multiple individual giraffe rooms, a large giraffe family room, a VIP encounter area, viewing windows, and more. The new barn and increased savanna space will allow the zoo to expand its giraffe herd in the near future.
A new immersive way to encounter the amazing species of the savanna will be in a safari vehicle that will take guests into the heart of the Naylor Savanna. Guests will venture into the savanna and have the opportunity to feed and encounter multiple species from the comfort of the safari vehicle. Two Toyota Tundra's were generously donated to the zoo by North Park Toyota, and the outfitting of the trucks to become true safari-style vehicles was donated by South Texas Outfitters. Conserfari Tours will soon be available via reservations at www.sazoo.org.
