About this Event

Sliding-scale tickets are available & discount for garden volunteers.

Join us in the Colour-Me-Local Natural Dye Garden, whether you're a novice or an experienced natural dyer! Learn to how to use W**d plants to dye fabric, and take home a 100% cotton t-shirt that you create. We'll teach you the basics of shaped-resist dyeing, where fabric are manipulated into three-dimensional shapes and bound before dyeing, so that compressed or bound areas resist the dye and create patterns.

Gain knowledge and experience with natural dye techniques and take home a beautiful creation.

We will work with flowers from the Dye Garden and/or our environmental stewardship sites around Still Creek. The exact plants used will depend on what is flowering at the time of the workshop -- tansy or St. John's Wort are likely contenders, both of which are noxious weeds that are widespead in Vancouver.

All materials and equipment are included in the workshop fee.

What to expect

Participants will gather at garden. After a short logistics conversation and introductions, we will start stiching and binding our t-shirts into three dimensional patterns. We’ll then subsimmer them gently, allowing the colourants in the plants to transfer onto our fabric. While we wait for this alchemical process to unfold, we'll habe a short discussion about the natural dye process, as well as a Q&A session. Once our shirts have finished brewing, we’ll unwrap our creations and view the results.

A take-home resource will be provided if participants want to continue their creative explorations.

The workshop price includes all materials.
