About this Event
Join AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler for a Headliners Coffee & Conversations on Tuesday, April 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the National Press Club. Shuler will address artificial intelligence’s impact on the American workforce and the AFL-CIO’s ongoing work.
In February, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released data showing union representation grew by 463,000 in 2025. The AFL-CIO has interpreted this as U.S. workers looking to the labor movement for solutions as artificial intelligence (AI) threatens their jobs. Over the past three years, union favorability has been higher than it’s been in half a century.
Since 2022, job postings for occupations that involve lots of structured and repetitive tasks decreased by 13%, and employer demand for jobs that require more analytical, technical, or creative work grew 20%. AI automation will continue to disrupt the job market and displace workers in the coming years. In a press release earlier this year, President Shuler called standing up to tech billionaires making money off AI as the “next big fight" for the labor movement.
The event will begin with remarks from President Shuler followed by a moderated Q&A session. To submit a question in advance for the speaker, put UNION in the subject line and email it to [email protected]. The deadline for submitting questions in advance is 9 a.m. on the day of the address.
