Our visit will occur at an exciting time because their new exhibition will be open by then, allowing our group to be one of the first tours with the museum space fully dedicated to their yearly theme, Free Assembly, as opposed to just partially during the turnover.
During the tour, students will explore Free Assembly from a variety of perspectives. The exhibitions begin with the Constitutional definition of assembly and the role of assembly in the founding period but builds from there to art and artifacts representing many aspects of the human act of gathering, both past and present. Throughout the tour, students are asked to consider how and where they assemble, and why it matters. This experience is guided by reflection on and discussion of the artworks and artifacts that make up each of the collections within the larger exhibition.
Here is a rundown of what will be on view during our visit:
The Forgotten Freedom: American Assembly at 250
1. Showing Up Since 1776
-- Born in Assembly - the US was founded through the active use of the right to free assembly in third spaces
Key artifacts - chair from the First Continental Congress, replica inkstand of the one used to sign the Declaration of Independence, gavel used and bonnet worn by first Quaker woman to lead a service
-- Halls of Assembly - a celebration of the places we gather formally (legislative buildings) and informally
Key artifacts - tavern signs (positioned as restaurants, focusing on the importance of third spaces in our lives)
-- Freedom to Disagree - an exploration of the right to protest as a constitutionally protected assembly, with examples
Key artifacts - pins and posters from protests, language breaking down the backstory and impact of four historically significant protests
-- The Ties That Bind - an exploration of association
Key artifacts - girl scout vest, a union charter, a large case of union pins
In the Arena
This gallery features sports memorabilia as a celebration of this consistent manner in which Americans gather
One Song, Many Voices - this is a much smaller section, but explores music through this same lens, which is why we pair them thematically for students --Key artifacts - a custom-made jacket and shadowbox of various items from a Taylor Swift Eras Tour attendee
The Art of Free Assembly
-- Four sections
Intimate assembly (thematic focus - the dinner table)
Shared spaces (thematic focus - school, clubs)
Visibility and invisibility (thematic focus - assembly when denied, subversive assembly)
Creative assembly (thematic focus - the influence of creativity on assembly)
Heroes of Liberty from Around the World
Our one permanent exhibition, designed by the museum founder, shares stories of heroes of liberty from throughout the world
Assembly 2076
This space, opening early June, will invite guests to consider the future of free assembly.
