Who is this course for?

This course is designed for learners who are considering to appear for the NAT 5 Mathematics SQA exam. It provides opportunities to enhance skills in planning and organising, working independently and within teams, critical thinking and decision making, research, communication, and self and peer evaluation, in a range of contexts.

What topics will be covered?

The course covers the following topics:

  1. Algebraic Skills:Working with algebra, including expanding brackets, factorising expressions, completing the square, simplifying algebraic fractions, solving linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, rearranging formulas, finding the equation of a straight line, and solving simultaneous equations.
  2. Geometry & Trigonometry:Understanding shapes and measurements, including Pythagoras’ theorem, properties of circles (such as arcs, sectors and tangents), similar shapes, vectors, and basic trigonometry (SOH CAH TOA, sine and cosine rules), as well as calculating volume.
  3. Numeracy & Statistics:Using numbers and data, including percentages, fractions, reverse percentages, compound interest, increase and decrease (appreciation and depreciation), rounding using significant figures, and handling data such as drawing and reading graphs, finding the mean, median and mode, interquartile range, and drawing a line of best fit.
  4. Reasoning Skills:Reasoning skills involve thinking logically, explaining methods clearly, and applying mathematical knowledge to solve problems. Students are expected to interpret information, justify their answers, show clear working, and check that their solutions make sense. These skills help learners tackle unfamiliar and real-life problems with confidence and accuracy.
