Nagata Shachu is proud to present an exciting collaboration of Japanese and Korean music with Nagata Shachu, Haneum, and Eunji Kim on March 29, 2025 at Harbourfront Centre Theatre, the closing concert of the 27th Anniversary Season.This season finale concert is a collaboration with Haneum, a band formed by members of The Korean Traditional Music Association of Canada, Korean drummer/percussionist Eun Ji Kim (Kklily) and Japanese Taiko group Nagata Shachu.
Haneum is a band composed of musicians who studied traditional Korean music and western jazz, aiming to create and perform music that reflects the identity of its Korean-Canadian musicians. The band consists of Roa Lee (kayagum - 12-string zither), Sanga Lee (pansori - narrative song), Jay Yoo (jazz guitar), and John Lee (Korean drums and flute). Haneum is Korean for "One Sound", "Korean Sound" or the "Tone of the Soul".
Joining Haneum, and also performing solo, is Korean drummer/percussionist Kklily (Eunji Kim). Kklily is a graduate of the Korean National University of Arts majoring in percussion and traditional arts. In 2017 she won the Grand Prize in the Gang Gam-chan Festival National High Court Pansori Contest. Kklily has performed in Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Mongolia, France and Germany. Since moving to Canada in 2022, she has performed at various festivals and events throughout Toronto and is an artist and teacher of The Korean Dance Studies Society of Canada.
Based in Toronto, Nagata Shachu has enthralled audiences internationally with its mesmerizing and heart-pounding performances of the Japanese drum (taiko) since its formation in 1998. While rooted in the folk drumming traditions of Japan, the ensemble’s principal aim is to rejuvenate this ancient art form by producing innovative and exciting music that seeks to create a new voice for the taiko. The nine members of Nagata Shachu ensemble are founder Kiyoshi Nagata, and Aki Takahashi, Andrew Siu, Kevin He, Atsushi Kato, Tatsuki Shimoda, Brian Liang, Eriko Murata, and Sakura Ariga.
