Mwana Congo, the new group exhibition

OpenArtExchange (OAE) a gallery specializing in African art will open the new year on Saturday January 18 with work by three artists from Congo-Kinshasa: Steve Bandoma whose satirical ink and acrylic works capture the imagination Henri Kalama known for his abstract paintings and Freddy Tsimba who makes striking sculptures from recycled materials such as cutlery and keys. The exhibition is part of a larger program that shows the enormous diversity of contemporary African art.

The title ‘Mwana Congo’ means Son(s) of Congo and refers to a song by Mohombi a famous Congolese singer who fled violence in his country to Sweden with his family as a child and recently returned to settle in Kinshasa. He wrote the song ten years ago about love and longing for Congo.

The three artists participating in this exhibition are internationally known. They could have left Congo but they are rooted there and have chosen to contribute to Congolese society each in their own way. OAE director Joke Bakker: “They are very different in their expression but they all reflect on the same sometimes cruel and tragic reality in Congo where they especially appreciate the beauty of the country.”

Opening and New Year's reception

The official opening of the exhibition and the New Year's reception will take place on Saturday 18 January 2025 at 4 p.m. Michiel Moerkerk and Silke Blommaert play the African harp (kamale n'goni) and guitar and provide a mix of calm swinging and energetic music.

The exhibition runs until 1 March 2025.

About the artists:

Steve Bandoma (1981) is driven by issues such as politics religion the environment or racial differences always expressed in a very chaotic and bizarre way to reflect the energy and violence of today's world. In addition to his art practice he runs a non-profit organization that supports various community projects. He is currently in the eastern part of Goma to train young talents in the refugee camps there.

Henri Kalama (1973) is a painter known for his abstract works. But he is also a scientist graduated from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. His work revolves around 'cosmic vibrations' which he describes as emotions and spiritual energy that are conveyed through color. Kalama sees colors as carriers of deep feelings and universal truths. Since 2016 he has been the director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa where he mentors future Congolese artists.

Freddy Tsimba (1967) is a sculptor and multidisciplinary artist known for creating powerful works that go beyond traditional art forms. His sculptures address themes such as life death and hope transforming objects of destruction into symbols of renewal and humanity's power to rebuild. In his work he critiques systems of control such as religion and neo-colonial exploitation but he also honors those who are often overlooked and oppressed.
