Enjoy an afternoon of music, performance and celebration within one of Te Whanganui-a-Tara's most treasured historic buildings. Built in 1866, Old St Paul’s has stood at the heart of the city for 160 years as a place of music, memory, ceremony and community.The Friends of Old St Paul’s warmly invite the public to celebrate the 160th anniversary of Old St Paul’s, alongside 60 years since the founding of the Friends organisation – the long-standing independent support group dedicated to championing and preserving this much-loved heritage place.
Musical Adventure Programme
Please note there will be no intermission and timings are approximate.
From 1.45pm
Visitors are invited to watch Bell Master Steve Dean and his team ringing peals on the bells. Please note that while the bells are raised, entry to the church will be via the south porch (with a step up into the building).
2.15pm - 4.00pm
Master of Ceremonies Dave Armstrong – playwright, screenwriter, trumpet player and columnist for The Post – will guide audiences through an exciting afternoon of performances.
2.20pm – Max Toth
Sub Organist at Wellington Cathedral and former Richard Prothero Organ Scholar, Max Toth presents a rare solo organ recital before departing for a prestigious Organ Scholarship at Exeter Cathedral in the United Kingdom. Audiences can expect playing that ranges from lyrical delicacy to thrilling, cathedral-filling grandeur.
2.45pm – Hutt City Brass Sextet
Led by horn player James MacKay, a sextet from Hutt City Brass will perform a magnificent medley sure to shake the timbers of Old St Paul’s.
3.10pm – Nota Bene Chamber Choir
Acclaimed chamber choir Nota Bene, directed by Maaike Christie-Beekman, will present a beautiful selection of classical and contemporary works. Many Friends members will remember the choir from their performances at the Friends’ 2025 Carol Service.
3.30pm – Kathryn Mosley & Eleanor Carter
Senior Lecturer in Collaborative Piano at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington Kathryn Mosley joins NZSO cellist Eleanor Carter for a programme of solo and duet performances for piano and cello.
