Music for 8 Colours
Ready to step beyond the ordinary?
Music for 8 Colours is an immersive, in-person sound and light experience designed to envelop the audience from every direction. With the artist positioned at the centre of the space, the work unfolds through eight spatialised speakers and a synchronised lighting environment, forming a living field of sound and colour.
The evening begins with atmospheric soundscapes, gently drawing listeners into the space and setting the tone for deep listening and sensory immersion.
The main performance by Jack Joy draws inspiration from the original eight-colour Pride flag, first designed in 1978. While today’s flag is widely recognised in six colours, two were removed over time due to production and visibility constraints. The Eighth Colour reclaims the full spectrum, with each colour represented as a distinct musical and emotional theme. As sound travels fluidly around the room and light responds in dialogue, the experience builds toward a final crescendo, a chromatic fireworks moment where all eight colours converge.
The second act features Misty Jungle, a Liverpool-based Brazilian jazz-fusion project inspired by North Brazilian rhythms, dense jungle textures, and imagined mythological creatures such as the feathered snake and the lunar anteater. Their music blends groove, improvisation, and atmosphere, expanding the immersive world of the night in a more rhythmic, organic direction.
By combining cutting-edge research with real-world performance, this project offers a bold glimpse into new ways of experiencing music beyond the traditional stage.
Music for 8 Colours is part of a Research Project conducted by CoSTAR, MusicFutures and supported by The Music Venue Trust. We are exploring how technology innovations might connect artists, audiences and venues in new ways, and how this could support new business models in the pursuit of a more equitable live music ecosystem.
During this performance, some data about you (for example, your body movements) may be captured anonymously via cameras and microphones in the venue. This data will be used to influence the live experience and will not be stored or used for any other purpose.
