Led by the wise hoopoe, they cross seven symbolic valleys: yearning, love, knowledge, detachment, unity, wonder, and finally annihilation in the Beloved. Each marking a stage of inner transformation. Along the way, many falter, unable to release fear, ego, or illusion. Those who endure reach the end only to discover that the Simurgh they sought is reflected in themselves.
