About this Event
Nostalgic For Nothing Cinema is excited to present the next Movie Night Fundraiser at Moments Co-op, featuring Eyes of the Rainbow (1977, 47 min), the Assata Shakur Story.
Assata Shakur, a Black Panther and Black Liberation Army leader, escaped from Pr*son in 1979 and was given asylum in Cuba, where she lived until her passing. Featuring the music of Sweet Honey in the Rock and the Danza Nacional de Cuba, Eyes of the Rainbow creates a beautiful tapestry, interweaving Assata's life story, her politics, and her spiritual connection to Yoruba Orisha Oya, the AfroCuban goddess of the rainbow. Gloria Rolando, director of the film, has been a member of the Cuban national film institute for 20 years and now heads her own independent filmmaking group. She dedicates Eyes of the Rainbow to all women who struggle for a better world.
We encourage attendees to read some of Assata Shakur's writing prior to the movie night. Here is a free PDF of her biography courtesy of Internet Archive. We will have limited copies of her writing available to buy!
