Movement & Meaning: Queer Stories in Motion is an expressive evening of dance and mental health awareness that centers the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals through movement. Featuring performances by Oakland University dancers, each piece explores mental health issues that impact the LGBTQ+ community, including societal attitudes toward and oppression of LGBTQ+ persons, suicide, anxiety, substance use, and LGBTQ+ resilience.Between dance pieces, Graduate Counseling Students will share brief educational insights about the mental health issues impacting LGBTQ+ communities, helping the audience connect what they see on stage with real world experiences and research.
Following the performances, audience members are invited to remain for a post performance panel discussion that further explores the themes presented, the intersection of dance and mental health, and the importance of affirming care and community support for LGBTQ+ individuals.
This collaborative event was created by Dr. Michael P. Chaney (Professor, Department of Counseling and Founder of The Pride Project) and Teresa Muller (Special Lecturer of Dance) and reflects a shared commitment to using art, education, and dialogue to foster empathy, awareness, and affirmation.
