About this Event

On the face of it, Mount Sophia looks (and sounds) like a very respectable enclave with a very respectable neighborhood. The numerous educational institutions add more life to the otherwise quiet atmosphere. But Mount Sophia holds a deep dark secret. Nobody talks about it now...

Mount Sophia was once a pirate’s hideout where the infamous pirate chief kept his loot. After the plundering, and pillaging, the pirates would simply paddle up the Rochor River. Selegie was nothing more than a simple track. This was a long time ago – when The Dutch East India Company almost ruled the entire East of Asia. Today, Mount Sophia, together with Mount Emily, sits atop the hill, almost like an aged old outpost.

Mount Emily, on the other hand, holds a more endearing past. The once so lovable (and popular) Mount Emily Swimming Pool was once a reservoir. Today, it is known simply as a nondescript Mount Emily Park. Meet me at Dhoby Ghaut MRT on the 16th July 2022 (Saturday), 9am. Together, we’ll discuss why the pirates had a penchant for attacking the fleet from the Dutch East India Company, and also why the pirates had to do what they thought was right. And of course, we’ll take a slow walk to soak in the pleasant atmosphere.

This tour will end at Short Street - where we’ll be able to drench ourselves at the Rochor Original Beancurd stall. If you do include a stick of U Char Kueh, I’ll also include the story of its origins (I mean the U Char Kueh’s origins). Yes, Rochor Original Beancurd serves U Char Kueh, my favorite butterfly buns and other pastries too…

Note:

  • We do the world wide practice of tipping at the end of the tour.
  • We also reserve the right to accept or reject habitual late cancellations and No Shows.
