Moonlight Ale
Moonlight Ale is a Celtic-influenced band based out of Charleston, SC. The Ale is inspired by contemporary, folk and punk elements from across the pond, with a healthy dose of Lowcountry feel in its originals. The band's songbook blends a unique style drawn from both the traditional Irish songbook and a formidable original catalog, and heavily features Irish mainstays like The Pogues, The Sawdoctors, and the Waterboys; time-tested Irish traditional folk songs like “Whiskey in a Jar” and “The Wild Rover”; as well as plenty of originals and a few American fan favorites.
Formed by singer / guitarist Jimmy McElligot at Chapel Hill in 2000, the name has persevered through the decades and across state lines, yielding four albums in its existence. In 2020, released its fourth and most ambitious LP to date, No Waste of Whiskey. In 2022, the band released the single “Banned for Life”, hailed by the Charleston City Paper as “so damned catchy.” The band is hard at work on its fifth LP, due in 2025.
A mainstay of Charleston, SC’s pub scene, the band’s trademark is its live show. A night with the Ale features raucous Irish anthems, misty-eyed ballads, and rollicking trad sets. It all makes for a high-flying, whiskey-soaked evening, perfect for pub corners and festival stages alike.
* Show is for all ages. Attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a parent. Attendees under 21 will be subject to a $5 surcharge. The surcharge must be paid in cash at the door on the day of the event.
