There is something romantic about sketching from a park bench or a cafe, filling a sketchbook with vignettes of the people and places we encounter. However, there are challenges involved with depicting space, there are logistical concerns, and people sometimes feel inhibited about getting started. How can we draw a figure in a street scene if they wonder off mid-sketch? What to do if the light changes?
With these tutored classes, students will be given the methodology and peer-group support to help them break the ice. We will experiment with mark making and using various materials to find ways of expressing the textures and rhythms of nature. We will go to parks and gardens, places like St Botolph’s Priory, and through sustained observation of the subject, heighten our sense of being in a certain place and time.
Before going out to draw, we will meet at 37 Queen Street or arrange a place to meet nearby. While out together on location, students will be given one-to-one tuition, with each participant being seen in turn and given feedback. We will assemble at the end, exchange ideas and share the work we have produced.
Sketching materials are provided, but if students wish to paint, or have some specific medium they want to use, they are welcome to bring their own equipment too. In the case of wet weather, we will settle to work inside at 37 Queen Street.
