Figurative images are often pregnant with narrative suggestion. Pictures tell stories, though, as the artist Paula Rego said, not in a straightforward way. This course will be an opportunity to focus on an often-overlooked aspect of figure drawing, which may be exploited to make a more compelling and dramatic image.
With reference to art history, we will look at how artists construct a visual narrative and how they lead the eye around a composition. We will work from either clothed or nude models, each with props or costumes. Students will be given stories to use for inspiration. We will use our imaginations and supplementary reference material to present the figures in the context of a scene; transplanting the model from the classroom to a grotto, a forest or a riverbank.
This is a great course for anyone interested in illustration and design. The classroom atmosphere is fun, relaxed and nurturing. The assignment is adaptable to students of all abilities; the brief can be made more or less complex to suit the student's needs.
All artist-quality materials are included in the price of the classes.
Tea, coffee and biscuits are also provided.
