Led by Pt. Sukhdev Chaturvedi of the Darbhanga Gharana, this presentation opens an exploration of Dhrupad, one of India’s oldest classical music traditions. Once sung in temples and royal courts as a means of spiritual reflection, Dhrupad is defined by tonal clarity, disciplined voice culture, and an unhurried, contemplative approach to raga development. Traditional elements such as meend, gamaka, and nasal sound modulation are demonstrated within the performance, offering insight into the form’s technical structure and aesthetic depth.
The concert extends this foundation through a measured East–West collaboration, blending Western instrumentation with classical Dhrupad aesthetics while retaining the integrity of the tradition. A Top-Grade artist with All India Radio and a recipient of the U.P. Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Pt. Chaturvedi has devoted nearly four decades to Dhrupad as a performer, trainer, and composer. He is joined by Pt. Mrinal Upadhyay (pakhawaj), Ustad Farooque Latif Khan (sarangi), Siddharth Kulkarni (keyboard), Yashwant Vaishnav (tabla), and vocal support from Adhishtha and Gagan Chaturvedi, bringing together lineage and contemporary dialogue within a single musical framework.
This performance is supported by Reliance Foundation.
