CEU Course Overview: Clinical Supervision Models in Social Work

Course Title: Exploring Clinical Supervision Models: Best Practices for Supporting Social Workers



Course Goals:

This training will provide clinical supervisors with a thorough understanding of various models of supervision in social work. We will explore each model’s distinct approach to supporting supervisees and examine how different theories can be applied to enhance both clinical skills and personal development. The course will also include best practices for implementing these models and using case vignettes for practical learning.


Course Outline:
  1. Exploring the Supervision Models
    We will review each model’s theoretical foundation, strengths, and application in clinical supervision:
    • Interactional Model
      Focuses on the dynamic relationship between the social worker and client. Supervisors analyze how these interactions influence the supervisee’s approach to client work and integrate insights into the supervision process. This model emphasizes reflective practice and adaptability.
    • Traditional Model
      The most hierarchical approach, where the supervisor assumes an expert role, providing direct feedback and guidance. Supervisors focus on ensuring that supervisees follow established protocols and develop technical skills. This model is effective for providing structure and clear guidance, especially for new or less experienced social workers.
    • Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Model
      This model applies principles of cognitive behavioral therapy to help supervisees identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. Supervisors encourage solution-focused approaches and structured interventions, helping supervisees to develop practical skills and techniques to use with clients.
    • Humanistic-Existential Model
      Emphasizes the personal growth and self-awareness of the supervisee. The supervisor creates a space for reflection on personal experiences, values, and the supervisee’s connection with clients. This model prioritizes authenticity, empathy, and the exploration of personal feelings and reactions to clients.
    • Psychodynamic Model
      Focuses on the unconscious dynamics and transference patterns that may emerge in the supervisor-supervisee relationship as well as in the client-worker relationship. Supervisors help supervisees become aware of their emotional responses and how these might affect their work with clients, aiming for deeper self-awareness and insight.
    • Integrative Model
      An adaptive model that blends elements from the other approaches to meet the unique needs of the supervisee. Supervisors draw on different theories and techniques depending on the supervisee’s developmental stage, the challenges they face, and the type of clients they serve.

  • Apply various models of supervision based on the needs of their supervisees.
  • Implement best practices for fostering effective supervision that supports clinical growth and personal development.

No prerequisites are required. This course is designed for social workers and other mental health professionals at all experience levels who are looking to expand their knowledge on managing safety and ethics in their practice.

About the Presenter:
Vanessa Valles, LCSW-S is a seasoned mental health professional with over 22 years of experience. As the owner of a private and group practice, she has dedicated the past 17 years to educating and mentoring other professionals. Vanessa is the author of The Terrible, Super Sad Day, a children's book that serves as a clinical tool for helping professionals working with children who have experienced loss or trauma. She has held various roles in the mental health field, including administrator, clinical trainer, quality assurance officer, field instructor, and clinical supervisor, and has provided CEUs to hundreds of mental health practitioners. Her broad background combines clinical expertise with educational leadership, making her a trusted resource in both practical and theoretical aspects of counseling.
