In an era where our connection to the environment is more vital than ever, the Christchurch City Choir invites you to a powerful celebration of the Earth. This concert is a masterfully curated journey through contemporary choral works, bridging the gap between the human spirit and the natural world through a performance defined by rhythmic complexity and local excellence.
The evening’s centerpiece is Paul Winter’s groundbreaking Missa Gaia (Earth Mass)—a vibrant "eco-spiritual" masterpiece that weaves the human voice together with the haunting, live-recorded calls of wolves, whales, and birds.
This isn't your typical choral concert. The choir is backed by a 10-piece band that brings a massive, contemporary soundscape to the Town Hall. From the grand resonance of the Organ and Piano to the rhythmic drive of Percussion, Bass, and Guitar, plus the lyrical colors of Saxophone, Flute, and Oboe, this performance moves seamlessly between jazz-inflected rhythms and soaring classical polyphony.
THE PROGRAM
The night also features the rhythmic vitality of Paul Halley’s Freedom Trilogy and Ubi Caritas, alongside the Silver Whispers Suite by acclaimed NZ composer Leonie Holmes. This local work celebrates life in all forms—from the scuttle of insects to the song of whales—set to the poetry of Christchurch’s own Marnie Barrell.
