About this Event

Mino Bimaadiziwin (5-Part Series) - Part 3: Zhaawanong (South)

Join the Sophia Hilton Foundation of Canada for Mino Bimaadiziwin, a powerful five-part series exploring Anishinaabe worldview, teachings, and storytelling based on the Four Directions.

🌿 Session 3: Zhaawanong (South)

From the Southern direction we learn about the cycle of youth and summer. Summer to Anishinaabe people includes Powwwow. How does powwow relate to smoke and dreaming? How does the Jingle Dress Dance relate to the Thunder Beings? If you think you already know powwow, you will be surprised! Join us for teachings from the Southern direction and hear old knowledge about powwow revived through the sound-based philosophy in the Anishinaabe language.

This engaging presentation offers insight into Indigenous knowledge systems, storytelling traditions, and timeless lessons that remain deeply relevant today.

🎤 Featuring: Dr. Jennifer Meness

Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation and Professor of Indigenous Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University, Dr. Meness brings deep knowledge, lived experience, and an accessible teaching style that welcomes both Indigenous and non-Indigenous audiences.

🧵 Special Setting

Held in an intimate gallery environment featuring stunning textile art created by Master Anishinaabe Quilt Designer Alice Williams from Red Lake First Nation, this event offers a uniquely immersive cultural experience.
