Light is one of the most powerful tools an artist possesses. In this focused mini-workshop, artists will learn how to clearly identify the direction, strength, and character of a light source—and use it intentionally to create depth, atmosphere, and dramatic visual impact.
The session begins with a concise 30-minute presentation comparing ineffective and successful uses of light in painting and drawing, demonstrating how thoughtful light design can transform an ordinary composition into a compelling one. We will examine how light direction affects value structure, edges, color temperature, and focal emphasis.
During the hands-on portion of the workshop, participants may choose to:
- Create a guided study designed to strengthen understanding of directional lighting, or
- Bring an existing painting or work-in-progress and receive practical guidance on how to increase clarity, drama, and visual focus through improved light organization.
This workshop is ideal for artists seeking to add greater dimensionality, mood, and visual power to their work while developing a clearer decision-making process for handling light in any subject.
