Join Amanda Adams of Seed & Stone Jewelry for a hands-on how-to workshop on making japa malas! Also called mala beads or prayer beads, these beautiful beaded necklaces have been used during meditation for thousands of years by Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs. They are used as tools to keep your mind focused while in meditation and as reminders of your intentions throughout the day. In the interest of time, we will be making mini malas so that you can get the process down without having to spend the whole day in class. Stringing and knotting full malas does take a considerable amount of time, especially when you're first learning. This class will introduce you to the methods that Amanda uses and has found most effective in a condensed 2 hour class.
IN THIS CLASS YOU WILL:
- Learn about the history of japa malas
- Learn how to use a japa mala during meditation
- Learn some common but powerful mantras to use
- Complete your own mini mala
- Gain the skills to make your own full malas at home
- Practice some self-love through art therapy
- Meet like-minded souls
- Tie lots of knots!
We will be using strong nylon thread paired with sustainably-sourced (and great-smelling!) Palo Santo beads and some semi-precious stone beads added in, if desired. We will finish off the mini malas with a guru bead and tassel, in the traditional way.
Heart-opening tulsi tea will be provided for participants. Amanda will have her handmade malas, bracelets, earrings & crystals for sale.
BRING:
- Pen or pencil to take notes with
- Glasses, if needed
- A friend!
