In this class, we will review the fascinating physiology of the 3 Sisters; corn, bean, and squash seeds, exploring what makes them uniquely adapted for a symbiotic relationship. We'll cover essential topics such as proper planting techniques, including a demonstration of successive planting to maximize yield. Understanding the mathematics behind germination ratios will provide valuable insights into seed viability. Additionally, we will compare the advantages and disadvantages of direct seeding versus transplanting, emphasizing the significance of sourcing quality seeds. Our discussions will also touch upon crucial ecological concepts, such as the interconnectedness of plant growth and environmental health. By the end of the class, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of seed physiology and sustainable planting practices, equipping them with the knowledge to cultivate thriving gardens. Participants will also receive a garden kit consisting of a resource book, gloves, tools and seeds. The series will conclude with a free cooking experience in the garden in June. Special guest, Marlene Aguilar of Irekuarhikua.
