Following Eventbrite registration, you will receive a link to a Qualtrics survey to provide some additional information regarding your participation, including preference for a K vs. R section, and clinical/translational grants vs. health services research grants. Completion of this survey is required, and your registration is not considered complete without this step.

What is a Mock Study Section?

This is an opportunity to learn how NIH grant reviewers, or “study sections,” think. As one of six grant reviewers you will discuss actual twelve-page K and R grants (already submitted in some version to the NIH). You will practice for the real K or R grant review process with a mock study section of your peers, facilitated by two faculty co-chairs who have served on real study sections.

This event is ideal for fellows and early career faculty who anticipate serving on a study section in the future and for those who are writing career development and R01 grants. It simulates an NIH Study Section in every detail, including the work expected. Participants will be assigned a grant to review in either clinical and translational research or health services research.

Learning objectives:

To review and critique the quality of a scientific grant application in a formal review meeting
To apply the guidelines for peer review as developed by the NIH
To discuss the common weaknesses of scientific grant proposals

Workload expectation:

Pre-lecture video: (less than 30 mins)
Grant review: (1-3 hours)
Document upload and workshop preparation: (1 hour)
Mock Study Section: October 16, 3:00-5:30 PM (2.5 hours)
