About this Event
MIC CHECK AT THE DINER
A Collective Hip-Hop Storytelling Experience
At a table in Adams Morgan, a group of strangers create a shared voice.
MIC CHECK AT THE DINER is a facilitated storytelling experience rooted in hip-hop’s hidden histories. Stories that shaped the culture but are often left unspoken.
Participants gather around a shared table to watch selected excerpts and sit with what surfaces: memory, perspective, lived experience and hidden history!
Then the room responds. Together.
Through guided conversation and collective contribution, each individual creates a single symbolic microphone, a physical record shaped by the voices in the space.
What remains is something you take home, a shared artifact that holds the story of the room. Let’s sit and be intentional together.

Agenda
🕑: 04:00 PM - 04:20 PM
Doors Open
Info: The room is already alive when you walk in. Instrumental hip-hop playing. Coffee waiting. Every seat has something on it, don't look yet. Find your place, settle in, and let the space do its work. This is intentional. So is everything else tonight.
🕑: 04:20 PM - 04:30 PM
The Ticket
Info: When you arrived, you received a ticket. Not a receipt. Not a name tag. A prompt your specific entry point into the story this room is about to tell together. Read it. Sit with it. Don't share it yet. The film goes first.
🕑: 04:30 PM - 05:00 PM
The Film
Info: Lights down. No discussion. No commentary. Just the hidden history of hip-hop documented, preserved, and largely untold playing in front of a room of people who are about to respond to it. Watch what stays with you.
🕑: 05:00 PM - 05:10 PM
The Moment Between
Info: The film ends. The room sits with it. Then your ticket means something different than it did thirty minutes ago. This is your entry point. This is your voice. The microphone in front of you is waiting.
🕑: 05:10 PM - 05:45 PM
The Response
Info: No art experience required. No right answer. Your prompt is your guide and your microphone is the form that holds your response. Paint it, mark it, make it yours but remember, what you create today is one chapter in a shared cultural story that lives beyond this room.
🕑: 05:45 PM - 06:15 PM
The Collective
Info: Pieces are set to dry. The microphones line up together for the first time. What was individual is now collective. Walk around. Look at what this room built. This moment right here is why MACHETIVE exists.
🕑: 06:15 PM - 06:30 PM
The Close
Info: A brief acknowledgment of what just happened. A photo with your microphone yours to take home, yours to keep. The artifact leaves with you. The story stays with all of us.
Seats for this experience are strictly limited. Once they're gone, they're gone. This is not a drop-in. This is a designed ritual with a specific number of voices — and yours is one of them.
