For experienced mental health interpreters. Focus on challenges with Deaf patients, using Demand-Control Schema. Gain insights & confidence
About this Event

This webinar is for interpreters who are not complete beginners in the domain of mental healthcare, but may have interpreted some mental health appointments, and are looking to build on their knowledge and reflective practice skills.

This training will focus on the main challenges that can occur when interpreting with hearing clinicians for Deaf patients with mental ill health.

Using the theoretical frame of Demand-Control Schema of interpreting (Dean and Pollard 2013) we will look at the challenges that are unique to community interpreters working in this domain.

The content of the training will:

  • Focus on the type of assessments that are conducted in hospital or in clinics with Deaf patients, that interpreters will encounter
  • Explore some of the translation challenges that can occur
  • Explore the dynamics of the mental health interaction, and how this differs from general community work
  • Explore the therapeutic relationship and explain the values that the clinician holds

Training delivery will include a mixture of theory and practice, including video material, lecture, clinician’s handbooks/assessment forms, and academic research data.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this training participants will:

Understand the differing goals and values clinicians will hold across the mental health sector.

Feel more informed and confident in their work, and have additional strategies they can apply to cope with the challenges of working in this specialised area.
