The Queen’s Closet returns to our roots, exploring the unique sound world of Restoration London. Composers there worked in a musical landscape coloured by the long shadow of Puritan rule of England, followed by the explosion of creativity and influx of overseas influences with the Restoration. From the 1660s London was a place of seemingly limitless possibilities, as culture repressed during the interregnum burst into life. We will be performing music by composers such as John Blow, Pelham Humfrey, Matthew Locke, John Lenton and of course Henry Purcell, who were creating music in the English tradition, but with a uniquely Restoration flavour of innovation. This performance will again be in the Cable Room at Harbourside at 4 Taranaki Street, Wellington. Restoration music was lively, sometimes brash, emotional, sometimes dissonant, and always overflowing with creativity. We feature a wide range of the sounds and colours of Restoration music, including hoboys, trumpets, recorders, strings and voices.
