ABOUT Kate and her practice:

Kate taught Meisner at The National Opera Studio, ArtsEd (MA & BA courses), The Centre, Rutgers Uni at the Globe and at National Opera Studio, DSL, The Actors Centre, Living Pictures, The Factory, and Institute of Performing Arts Paris. Kate is an actor, writer, and theatre maker. She trained at RADA and works in theatre, television, and film and currently performs her solo show The Old House. Kate is an actor, writer, and theatre maker, and works in theatre, television and film.

Kate has developed a movement practice which is now integral to her teaching and serves to help with discovering impulse and authentic expression. With the work firmly rooted in and focused on the Meisner Technique, Kate has been inspired by her explorations into the work of Gabrielle Roth's 5 rhythms dance, Kath Burlinson, Paul Oerter, Authentic Artist Collective, Discipline of Freedom; Paula Shaw, The Max and others, to widen and continuously evolve her approach.

The key Meisner exercise is called Repetition. It teaches participants to take the attention off themselves and put it on to their partners' behaviour, allowing it to affect them and cause a spontaneous and authentic response. It encourages a moment to moment capacity to listen/observe and respond with an emphasis on staying firmly rooted in the present. Repetition encourages us to put our acting/daily habits aside . We explore how to challenge our habitual ways of seeing and responding in order to discover what lies behind our armour and open up all that is available to us.
