Mehmet Akyazi & The Turkish Canadian Orchestra presents ‘Once Upon a Time’ & ’Trakia'
As part of the 2024 Lulaworld Festival, critically acclaimed, Toronto-based, Turkish musician and dancer Mehmet Akyazı leads a stellar 12-piece orchestra comprised of graduates of the Turkish Music Conservatory, alongside special guests performing a one-night-only double concert evening of Turkish, Balkan and international repertoire. Once Upon a Time
The first part of the evening, entitled ‘Once Upon a Time’, will take listeners on a musical journey through the history of international film via a medley of famous film scores, as interpreted by this highly accomplished large Turkish ensemble and enhanced by projections of scenes great cinematic moments from movies such as Pulp Fiction, Mozart and The Godfather.
Trakia
The second part of the evening, ’Trakia' will commemorate the 101st anniversary of the forced exchange between Greece and Turkey of approximately 1.6 million people. Special guests Brenna MacCrimmon, Suleyman Ergisi and Didem Turan will join Akyazı and his orchestra to perform Turkish and Balkan classics exploring the theme of "From their Ancesttor's Land to Their Homeland" drawing on the incredible energy that only the 9/8 rhythm of Turkish music can deliver!!!
This special evening celebrates Turkish music in Canada and around the world, as well as the special relationship that Turkish musicians and audiences have developed with Lula Lounge in recent years.
About Mehmet Akyazı (Artistic Director and Producer)
A graduate of Istanbul Technical University Conservatory Mehmet Akyazı worked a dancer and musician for many years in Turkey's first professional dance ensemble, Anadolu Ateşi Dance Group. Bringing together 12 Turkish musicians in Canada, he synthesized his experiences from 25 years on world stages to prepare for this grand concert. After more than 6 months of meticulous preparation, Akyazı is ready to share the richness of Turkish music with Toronto audiences.
About Secil Akyazı Co-Artisitc Director
Graduate of ITU Conservatory, Secil Akyazı worked as a dancer and choreographer for 11 years in Anadolu Ateşi Dance Group taking on the role of choreographer and stage director in numerous other dance groups. As the Art Director of this project, Secil has created unique and mesmerizing visual experience.
