synopsis

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) integrate sensing, computation, communication, and physical processes into devices and platforms that can monitor, support, and respond to patient needs.

CPS are engineered from, and depend on, the seamless integration of computation with physical processes and components. They enable hybrid, intelligent control over physical processes, driving innovation in the sciences and society.

A defining feature of CPS is the tight, bidirectional interdependence between computational processes, the physical environment, and often, human participants. Thus, CPS research benefits from considering the dynamic, progressing, and unpredictable nature of physical systems, user behavior, and environmental conditions. [1]

This talk will introduce the concept of CPS and showcase medical applications.

speaker

Principal Systems Engineer for Medical Cyber-Physical Systems (MCPS), Boston Scientific Corporation

Esteban has experience in aerospace and interdisciplinary technical collaboration. He manages critical matters of in the domains of electrophysiology, cardiac rhythm management, neuromodulation, and urology, applying systems engineering practices to medical and humanitarian technology. His perspective of industrial diplomacy bridges complex systems development and practical applications that improve human well-being.

Esteban holds a Doctor of Engineering in Systems Engineering from Colorado State University and a Professional Certificate in Architecture and Systems Engineering from MIT. He co-authored a paper that provided mission definition and stakeholder alignment for Central

America’s first satellite, Costa Rica’s DSpace, of the (10 cm)3, CubeSat class.

Esteban holds patents for Segmented Ground Pads for Electrophysiology Systems and RF Ablation for Treatment of Cardiac Arrhythmias. His professional memberships include the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the INCOSE Corporate Advisory Board (CAB, co-chair), Healthcare Working Group, and both LatAm (Latin America) and North Star Chapters. He is Assistant Scoutmaster for the Northern Star Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
