Join us at Meacham Urban Farm for a tour of all things farming. We will be learning about chickens, composting, crop production, and more!
About this Event

On average, your food travels 1,500 miles from the farm to your fork. All of those miles traveled means higher food waste and less nutritious food. It also means we only have access to foods that transport well and last a long time (apples in the grocery store are about a year old) What if there was another way?

What if, we ate a little closer to home. What if, we got to know our farmers, our local foods, our lands, and seasonal cycles with the same enthusiasm we know our sports stats or latest TV drama.

Our modern version of agriculture prizes efficiency over flavor and nutrition. It is built on the precarious razor edge of monoculture and external costs- costs to animals, soil, and people. How is it that so many suffer from food meant to nourish?

What if, there was a farm that was different? Meacham Urban Farm is nested right in the heart of downtown Tampa. Their goal is to inspire community engagement in the local food system and instill a commitment to environmentally conscious farming. At this farm, they build soil, invest in people, and nourish their community.

Join us on this behind the scenes tour of Meacham Farm as we lean about composting, urban farming, beekeeping, seeding, chickens, and other farm stories. Want more information? Check out the farm website Meacham Urban Farm. You can also contact [email protected] for more info about the tour.

Any HCC employees and students! Please use your @hcc email address to register.

What should I bring on this tour?

Bring some good shoes and a smile. Come ready to meet your meat and the farmers that produce it. Arrive about 15 min early to find parking, check in, and mingle with other farm minded folks. The tour is built to connect us to the systems and people that make food, so bring all of your questions! Did you bring a reusable water bottle or ride a bike? Then you can win prizes at the sustainability table when you check in.

Where can I park?

For tour visits, there are three options. There is limited street parking in front of the farm on Scott St, and more on the one-way Governor St, the east boundary of the farm. More parking is available in the parking garage of the Ella building. The entrance is off Governor St, just south of Scott St. From Meacham’s entrance, take Scott St. east to Governor St, turn right, and make the first left into the parking garage. The third option is the City parking lot on Scott St between Jefferson St and Morgan St, two blocks west of the farm, just past the Burger King.
