About this Event

MDI Spring 2022 Workshop: Topic Models: A Practical Introduction in Python with Dr. Jaren Haber

Topic models are among the most popular techniques in natural language processing (NLP), a versatile tool for understanding the latent themes in text that has been widely applied to websites, books, school applications, social media, and everything else. Topic models analyze word co-occurrences within and across documents to discover the topics that generated them, the topics’ component words, and their distribution over a corpus. This workshop will give you hands-on experience with a typical topic modeling workflow, including text preprocessing and model construction and evaluation. Basic familiarity with Python is required; prior experience with NLP is useful but not required.

This workshop will be held in-person and is only open to Georgetown University students, faculty and staff.

This workshop takes place over two days from 4:00-5:30pm. Attendees should plan to attend both dates:

  • Tuesday, March 15, 2022, 4:00-5:30pm
  • Wednesday, March 16, 2022, 4:00-5:30pm

About the Speaker: Dr. Jaren Haber is a Postdoctoral Fellow with Georgetown University’s Massive Data Institute. His research applies computational methods to study how organizational contexts, social categories, and media segmentation shape the impacts of structural inequalities. He also leads the GU Interdisciplinary Text Analysis Research (GUITAR) working group. Dr. Haber received his PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2020.

About MDI Workshops: Each semester MDI sponsors technical workshops to provide faculty, students, and staff the opportunity to be exposed to new methods, programming paradigms, and technologies.

Workshops scheduled this semester will be listed on eventbrite.

About the Massive Data Institute (MDI): At Georgetown’s McCourt School of Public Policy, the Massive Data Institute harnesses modern data and computing power to produce cutting edge research and improve public policy decision making.
