THE MYSTERY: It's New Year's Eve, 1999. The ball is about to drop on the 20th century, and there is only one place to be: Housing Works Bookstore. As the crown jewel of NYC’s art scene, this legendary bookstore is throwing the decade’s most exclusive New Year’s Eve blowout, featuring a world-renowned DJ spinning the soundtrack of a generation.
As the clock ticks toward Y2K, the absolute icons of the '90s are filling the VIP lounge, ready to party like it’s 1999—literally. But beneath the glow of the neon and the shimmer of butterfly clips, the atmosphere is electric with more than just celebration. Old rivalries are simmering, "revenge looks" are being served, and secrets are ready to be spilled before the calendar flips.
The vibe is immaculate—until the music cuts.
Before the first firework can hit the sky, a grizzly M**der shocks the dance floor, proving to be far more sinister than any pop-star scandal. With the New Year looming, the search for the killer is officially on. Was it Tommy Gainz, the Boy Band Front Man desperate for another #1 hit? Or was it a greedy ploy by 90s talk show host Casey Winters to boost her ratings?
Can you catch the culprit before the ball drops, or will the new millennium begin with a clean getaway? Join us for a night of chaotic neon fun and 90's nostalgia to see if you can solve this mystery! But watch out—no one will know who the killer is until it's too late! It could even be YOU!
THEME: New Year's Eve, 1999! Dress in your favorite 90s/Y2K looks. Think festive, colorful, and vintage. Embrace the cringe and revive your favorite looks from the era.
WHAT TO EXPECT: The goal of the night is to guess who among the suspects is the killer. There will be a host leading the game and narrating the main story of the mystery. There will also be a number of suspects who will have information about their characters and their (possibly nefarious) motivations. As the story unfolds, the host will provide clues, and there will be breaks for you to mingle with the Suspects and investigate leads. No one will know who the killer is until the very end, not even the other suspects, so it will be a real challenge to see if you can piece together the story and solve the mystery.
The General Admission ticket gives you the power to be a detective, so you can talk to suspects, pick up clues, and share theories with your fellow guests before making your final guess.
If you want to flex your improv skills, opt for a Character Role and become a part of the story as one of the suspects! Character Roles will be given a packet ahead of the party with information about your character, your motivations, and your costume.
