McCormick Tribune Ice Rink

Embrace the quintessential Chicago winter experience at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park. Located along Michigan Avenue with a breathtaking view of the Chicago skyline and the iconic "Bean," this world-class rink offers a festive atmosphere for skaters of all ages and skill levels. Whether you are a local tradition-seeker or a first-time visitor, skating under the twinkling lights of Millennium Park is an unforgettable way to celebrate the 2025–2026 holiday season.

2025–2026 Season Dates and Schedule

The rink officially opens on Friday, November 21, 2025, and remains active through February 1, 2026, provided weather conditions allow. To ensure a smooth experience for everyone, skating is organized into 90-minute daily sessions:

  • Daily Session Times: 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM, 5:00 PM, 7:00 PM, and 9:00 PM.
  • Check-in: Skaters should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to their scheduled start time.
  • Reservations: Tickets are released in two-week increments. Due to high demand, online reservations are required to guarantee your spot on the ice.

Admission and Rental Pricing

While admission to the rink is free, costs vary depending on whether you bring your own skates or require rentals. Please note that a $1 processing fee applies to all transactions.

  • Skate Rentals: $17 from Monday through Thursday and $21 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
  • Bring Your Own Skates: Skating is free Monday through Thursday. On weekends and holidays, only the first session of the day is free; subsequent sessions require a $5 non-refundable deposit.
  • Additional Services: Skate sharpening is available for $10, and locker rentals for personal belongings are $2. For younger children (under 42 inches), skate-aides can be rented on-site for $10 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Free Learn to Skate Lessons

For those looking to build confidence on the ice, the Chicago Youth Foundation offers free lessons every Saturday and Sunday morning from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. These lessons cover three distinct levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Hockey Skills. Skate rentals are included for lesson participants. Registration opens the Monday prior to each weekend, and because capacity is limited to 20 participants per level, pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

Pro-Tips for Your Visit

  • Holiday Security: On weekends and holidays, expect security checkpoints at park entrances. Plan for extra time to navigate these lines so you don't miss your session.
  • Teen Policy: Visitors aged 17 and under who are unaccompanied by a parent must show proof of their pre-purchased skate session to enter the park during restricted times.
  • Accessibility: The rink is inclusive; both power and manual wheelchairs are permitted on the ice when accompanied by a skating escort.
  • Stay Warm: After your session, head to Momentum Coffee or Millennium Hall, located right next to the rink, for hot cocoa and seasonal snacks.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need a ticket if I have my own skates?

Yes. All skaters must reserve a session time online, even if they are bringing their own skates and attending a free session.

What counts as a "Holiday" for pricing?

Holiday rates apply during Thanksgiving week (Nov 24–30), Winter Break (Dec 19 – Jan 11), and Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan 19).

Are refunds available if I can't make it?

No, all sales are final. Refunds are only issued if the facility is forced to close due to extreme weather or safety concerns.

What is the "Hockey Skills" lesson?

This is not a beginner class. It is designed for participants who already know how to skate but want to practice specific hockey maneuvers and drills.

What happens if it rains or is unusually warm?

As an outdoor rink, operations are weather-dependent. Check the Millennium Park Facebook or Twitter pages for real-time updates on closures due to unseasonable weather.
