Maya Satake, Bill Martin & Ethan BurtonFresh from her sell-out concert performing the repertoire of Ella Fitzgerald, singing sensation Maya Satake returns to the stage at the Dunedin Jazz Club for a “Pop-Up” gig at Moons. Accompanied by club director and pianist Bill Martin, this intimate setting will provide the opportunity for Satake to perform old and new repertoire in a more flexible format, with Martin’s walking bass lines and atmospheric chords providing a platform for young American alto saxophonist Ethan Burton to show his improvisational skills.
Satake joined the Dunedin Youth Jazz Orchestra in 2025 after winning a range of awards at a secondary level and is now quickly gaining a reputation as a confident soloist with a sensitive appreciation of the history of jazz. She has performed Big Band arrangements of standards by Ella Fitgerald (“Deed I Do”, “Shiny Stockings”), Harry Connick Jr (“All of Me”) and Frank Sinatra (“The Way You Look Tonight”) and is now exploring jazz standards in a small format that allows room for nuanced shifts in tempo, feel and expression. Ethan Burton originally hails from Portland, Oregon, and is relishing the performance opportunities in Dunedin, recently starring as the key soloist in tributes to Quincy Jones, John Coltrane and Charles Mingus.
Pianist Bill Martin has performed with a range of singers over the years, including Simona Smirnova, Molly McGee, Karin Reid and Robert Milne, and is excited about the opportunity to work directly with Satake, whom he has previously directed in Big Bands. Martin has developed the craft of piano vocal accompaniment through long residencies at venues such Dog with Two Tails and Carousel, as well as more formal work with choirs such as the Dunedin City Choir and Nautilus Chorale. He is looking forward to working directly with the two current star performers of the DYJO at this upcoming gig.
