About this Event

Are you a Black woman living in Toronto who is interested in meeting new people and building your network?

If so, Black Women Connect! Book Club may be perfect for you. This Toronto-based club focuses on celebrating Black literature, sisterhood, and reading. Our mission is to bring together Black women who enjoy reading fiction and nonfiction books by African-descended writers to have meaningful conversations, form connections, and socialize. Each month, we choose a book to use as the basis for discussing our experiences as Black women. Our club aims to inform, empower, inspire, and enrich the lives of our members through reading and connecting with each other. In addition to our book club, we also host special members-only brunches, retreats, thematic events, and other social events.

Join Us for a Riveting May Book Club Meeting with "What Never Happened"

This May, immerse yourself in a tale of suspense and intrigue with our book club's latest pick, "What Never Happened" by Rachel Howzell Hall. A story that interlaces a haunting past with a chilling present, set on the picturesque yet mysterious Catalina Island.

About the Book:

In "What Never Happened", we follow Colette “Coco” Weber, who returns to her childhood home on Catalina Island, the site of a traumatic home invasion that left her as the sole survivor two decades earlier. Seeking solace and a fresh start, Coco’s plan to retreat into her obituary writing is derailed when she uncovers a series of unnaturally similar deaths among the island's elderly. The stakes rise when Coco receives a terrifying threat: her own obituary.

Why You Should Join:
  • Gripping Mystery: Engage with a storyline that deftly combines suspense, a deep personal journey, and a touch of the macabre.
  • Complex Characters: Delve into Coco's richly developed character as she confronts her haunted past and an uncertain future.
  • Captivating Plot Twists: Discover the intricate connections between a killer's crimes and Coco's own history, set against the unique backdrop of Catalina Island.

Event Highlights:
  • In-Depth Discussion: Explore themes of survival, the impact of the past on the present, and the mystery surrounding the island's deaths.
  • Interactive Dialogue: Share your perspectives and engage in lively discussions about the novel's twists and turns.
  • Community Connection: Connect with fellow book enthusiasts in a supportive and enriching environment.
