The Town of Matthews annual Juneteenth Celebration event returns for a fifth year! This Matthews Juneteenth, the whole community is invited to witness together "The Language You Cry In." This documentary is about the power of a song, carrying the story of a family from Sierra Leone to the Gullah Sea Islands of South Carolina. From slavery and war, freedom and home, "The Language You Cry In" is a story of memory, how the memory of a family was pieced together through a song with legendary powers to connect those who sang it, with their roots.
A group of panelists representing African American artistic, cultural, and community traditions will discuss ways to activate these connections to create the story of our collective future. Come join the conversation!
