Join artist, master carver & curator Natanahira Pona to design, construct, and paint your own lantern from earth-friendly materials.

Then activate your lantern collectively with others in a special final trail walk to Depot Artspace to see the closing of Matariki exhibition 'Te Hauhake - Harvesting'

Each workshop will have a Matariki Kōrero to explain the significance of the festival & Māori Tikanga.

Cost: Koha (to cover additional costs)
Location: Whare Toi, Kerr St, Devonport - Located at the foot of Takarunga/Mount Victoria on Kerr St, Devonport

You may attend just 1 or more workshops
All ages welcome.

Depart with lanterns from Whare Toi, Kerr St, Devonport to ‘Te Hauhake – Harvesting’ exhibition at Depot Artspace.
If it is a clear night we will do some star gazing where I will point out Puanga & other significant stars.

Originally born & bred in Turangi, local artist, sculptor and master carver Natanahira Te Pona has practiced the art of Whakairo (carving) for over 30 years now.
Pona has extensive knowledge in the use of tools and materials, as well as techniques which he has been teaching in numerous schools and arts centres throughout Aotearoa.
Pona has been part of numerous exhibitions and projects including being part of & organising the sculpture symposia in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato, the 2014 Rotorua Sculpture Symposium and also represented Aotearoa in World Wood Day held in Nepal in 2016.
His current series of contemporary Whakairo uses a mixture of wood and bronze, which explores important themes & stories of our modern society.
Natanahira is currently based at the Lake House Arts in Takapuna.
