This is a THEATRE MASTER CLASS held on a black box stage open to all performers, dancers, actors, theatre-makers, circus performers, musicians; using mask, puppetry, object theatre and movement.
As the Theatre In-Balance Institute and Incubator, we are a French/Swedish theatre company specialising in object theatre, with a three-year residency at Stenkrossen in Lund and touring productions previously in Malmö, Lund, Copenhagen, Barcelona, and Paris.
Mask is a way to create dramaturgy and distance with our own body, designing another form, drawing our body and space, a way to transform and become others, as close as possible to ourselves. Mask is one of the most ancient forms of theater,as contemporary and relevant as ever... Explore within the world of object theater and mask, through the participation of the whole group, an ecosystem which gives life to the character on stage. The class is led by Mariana Araoz, with elements of Mime incorporated by invited guest performer and pedagogue Olivia Longo.
MARIANA ARAOZ
French/Argentinian/Venezuelan Mariana Araoz is Artistic Director of Theatre In-Balance, a biologist and a puppet/mask master, creator of the ©In-Balance Method. Mask and puppet performer, director and writer, Mariana teaches mask, puppetry, physical and object theatre at among others Teaterhögskolan Malmö, Fridhems Teaterlinje, internationally at KHIO in Oslo, Conservatoire Nationale Supérieur d’Art Dramatique, Ecole du Jeu in Paris, National Drama school in Hong Kong and Moscow and at theater institutions in Minneapolis, Chicago, New York, Sevilla, Barcelona, Caracas and more. Currently Mariana is based in Malmö and Paris.
OLIVIA LONGO
Olivia Longo is a highly established Swedish theatre/film actress and drama teacher with years of experience teaching theatre to young people and adults. Olivia started her acting training journey in Paris, was taught by members of the PETER BROOKS company in “Mahabarata” , studied mime inspired by Decroux. In Sweden Olivia continued with physical theatre with Robert Jacobsson, Teater Albatross and since then has worked solidly as a character & physical theatre actress with theatre companies such as Alla tiders teater, INSITE, Teater Foaje, Fri Scenkonst, Apolonia, among others. Olivia is passionate about physical and classic theatre.
The third MASTER CLASS of the season will be two full days over the weekend APRIL18th and 19th led by Mariana Araoz (Sw/France) on the In-Balance Method.
This is a THEATRE MASTER CLASS held on a black box stage open to all performers, dancers, actors, theatre-makers, musicians, even beginners; using masks, puppetry, object theatre and movement.
Places are strictly limited and the class is open to all, so participants need to book.

ABOUT THE METHOD
The ©In-Balance Method is a method Mariana created throughout her work as a theatre-mask-puppet master, as an actor, writer, director, and pedagogue and she is considered an expert in her field. Currently taught by Mariana in drama schools all over the world, the Method is based on her 30-plus years of experience in theatre and pedagogy.
The focal points of the ©In-Balance Method for an ensemble on stage are:
-Transmission of knowledge
-Service on stage
-Balance of power
-Collective experience of movement, choreography and creativity
- using elements of mask, puppetry, physical and object theatre
ABOUT MARIANA ARAOZ
The class is led by Mariana Araoz, internationally recognised mask/puppetry & object theatre expert, professor of mask at Teaterhögskolan Malmö since 2013. She is the Artistic Director of TMR /Theatre In-Balance in Sweden, and of Maison de l'Equilibre du Genre/Collectif Masque in Paris and divides her time between Sweden and France. Her work is regularly showcased internationally and in Sweden. She teaches her In-Balance Method of physical theatre at drama schools in Sweden, the US, France, Barcelona including at Khio in Oslo, Ecole du Jeu in Paris. Her book is available for purchase.

In Paris we have been conducting professional theatre training for over ten years. Now we bring the whole programme to Sweden and therefore in 2025 have opened The In-Balance Incubator & Institute in Lund/Malmö.
The masterclasses can be taken individually or as part of a longer 2-year DIPLOMA PROGRAMME.
The In-Balance Incubator & Institute is a part of our ongoing lab project connected with our open stage and summer Festival in Lund every year at Stenkrossen where Theatre In-Balance have a home for the next 3 years thanks to the extended MAXI residency we have received from 2026..
