About Mercedes López:
"Mercedes Lopez was born and grew up in Oaxaca, Mexico, where she started her artistic career with the practice of drawing and painting, in which close contact with rural life and artisanal production were a great influence.
Both exerts an enduring influence on her work, which she defines as a visual exploration of the basic forms and structures in nature, as well as the search for what connects us as human beings to the natural world. She defines her artistic practice as a continuous process of visual research that begins with the observation of the environment, from which the materials and images on which her work is based come.
Mercedes graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Oaxaca where she specialized in traditional techniques of printmaking which she has practiced in its different approaches, both
traditional and experimental.
In 2012 she completed a printmaking practice at the Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, Washington, U. S., an art center where she has also given talks and workshops as a guest artist in the past years.
She has a Master’s Degree in Art Production from the School of Arts of the Autonomous University of Morelos, where she also did a residency at the Center of Biological Research. During her residency there, she explored the relationship between art and nature.
Her search in the field of visual arts has led her towards experimentation and research with different media such as installation and expanded graphics, also introducing organic and
ephemeral materials in her work.
In recent years she has also served as organizer and coordinator of various exhibitions with the aim of making visible and disseminating the work of women artists involved in the practice of printmaking. In 2019 she participated as co-organizer of the binational show “Beyond Borders: Oaxaca-Seattle Exchange” with artists from the U.S. and Mexico.
Parallel to her artistic practice, she is currently a teacher at the School of Visual Arts of the Autonomous University of Oaxaca.
Mercedes has held several individual exhibitions of her work and has participated in more than 40 group shows in Mexico, Spain, Germany, the United States and Italy."
