Mesmerizing orchestra welcomes great Moroccan promise, who previously collaborated with Fatoumata Diawara and Herbie Hancock.
------------------------------------------------------------------
The super diverse Marmoucha Orchestra sheds new light on the musical traditions of North Africa, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Special guest during Gnawa Fusion at the BIMHUIS is Mehdi Nassouli, the internationally renowned Moroccan singer and player of the string instrument guembri. He’s seen as the future of gnawa, the hypnotic traditional style which is currently popular with young jazz, reggae and rock musicians.
Especially for Mehdi Nassouli, the Marmoucha Orchestra has developed a repertory including authentic gnawa pieces accompanied by modern orchestral arrangement, as well as gnawa rhythms fusing with jazz and other western styles. Gnawa Fusion is inspired by the Moroccan-Algerian tradition of the lila, a festive ritual where musicians are trying to contact the spirits of their forefathers through hypnotic ensemble playing.
Mehdi Nassouli previously collaborated with, among others, Fatoumata Diawara, Herbie Hancock, Titi Robin en Alpha Blondy.
