About this Event

Join us for our 13th Season as we partner with Verismo Opera to present 4 ballet-operas spanning 300 years of masterpieces in dance, singing and live orchestral music.
Artistic Director: Bogdan Mynka • Resident Choreographer: Amalia Najera

Performance Schedule

Program 1: Cain, overo il primo omicidio (Cain, or the first homicide)

Sept. 10th - 18th

Composer: Allessandro Scarlatti, 1707

The season will open with Alessandro Scarlatti’s rarely-performed baroque gem - Cain, overo il primo omicidio. Come see the Marigny Opera House transformed into the lavish Garden of Eden. Cain, overo il primo omicidio was originally composed as an oratorio in Rome, and will find new life as a fully staged opera-ballet.

Program 2: Die Sieben Todsünden (The Seven Deadly Sins)

Dec. 10th - 20th

Composer: Kurt Weill, 1933

Composed during the time of tremendous political upheaval in Europe, this ballet-chanté was the last work by the genius Kurt Weill before immigrating to the United States. The story follows Anna I (a singer) and Anna II (a dancer) - two split sides of one woman determined to earn a better life for herself, travelling through 7 cities across the country, returning to Louisiana to finally buy a home for her and her family.

Program 3: La Damnation De Faust (The Damnation of Faust)

March 4th - 14th

Composer: Hector Berlioz, 1846

In this 1859 opera based on the play by Goethe, an aging philosopher sells his soul to the demon Méphistophélès in exchange for youth and the pursuit of the beautiful Marguerite. Faust is a tragic romance, exploring themes of temptation, redemption, and the dangers of bargaining with the Devil.

Program 4: Dido and Aeneas

May 13th - 23rd

Composer: Henry Purcell, 1688

The enduring masterpiece of England’s greatest Baroque composer, Dido and Aeneas is a moving tragedy by Henry Purcell based on Virgil's Aeneid. The story follows Dido, Queen of Carthage, and her tragic love for Aeneas of Troy. In this production, dance and voice are inseparable: what cannot be sung is danced, and what cannot be danced is sung. Purcell's sublime Baroque score comes alive in a landscape of movement and breath, building to one of opera’s most heartbreaking farewells.
