Nl Twee jaar geleden liet Maria Hassabi een blijvende indruk achter op het festivalpubliek met On Stage, een solo die opviel door de hypnotiserende traagheid en magnetische intensiteit die kenmerkend zijn voor haar werk. Nu keert ze terug met een nieuwe groepschoreografie, die in wereldpremière gaat in de recent gerenoveerde theaterzaal van Bozar. Voor deze creatie werkt Hassabi met een lange bank die ze aan de rand van het voortoneel plaatst. Daarmee hertekent ze het podium tot een smalle, lineaire ruimte. Langs deze lijn ontvouwen vijf performers een reeks van zorgvuldig gecomponeerde tableaus. Hun lichamen zweven tussen rust, verwachting en observatie, en houden een voortdurende spanning in stand. De bank fungeert tegelijkertijd als steun, display en kader. De performers staan tegenover het publiek en openen zo een parallel veld van aandacht. Steeds opnieuw gaan ze op zoek naar aanwezigheid – apart en samen, met elkaar en met het publiek. De performance zuigt onze blik volledig naar zich toe en behoort tot de meest radicale vormen van toeschouwerschap op het festival. Elk gebaar groeit uit tot een choreografie van punten en tekens: een zin die wij als publiek eindeloos mogen herschrijven.

Il y a deux ans, Maria Hassabi avait marqué les esprits du public du festival avec On Stage, un solo d’une intensité magnétique, porté par une lenteur hypnotisante et caractéristique de son travail. Elle revient aujourd'hui avec une nouvelle chorégraphie d’ensemble, présentée en première au festival dans la salle de théâtre fraîchement rénovée de Bozar. Pour cette création, Hassabi installe un long banc à l’avant-scène, transformant le plateau en un espace linéaire et ténu. Le long de cette ligne, cinq interprètes déploient une suite de tableaux méticuleusement composés. Leurs corps sont suspendus entre le repos et l’anticipation, l’observation et la tension, maintenue de bout en bout. Le banc se fait tour à tour support, piédestal et cadre pour la chorégraphie. Face au public, les performeur·euses instaurent un champ d'attention parallèle : à chaque instant, seul·es ou ensemble, entre elleux ou avec le public, iels négocient leur présence. Dans cet espace, notre regard de spectateur·ice se trouve happé par une expérience d'une rare radicalité : chaque geste trace une ponctuation de points et de signes, telle une phrase chorégraphique que nous sommes invité·es, sans relâche, à composer.

Two years ago, Maria Hassabi presented On Stage at the festival that left a lasting impression, marked by her signature slowness and magnetic intensity. She now returns with a new group choreography, presented as a world premiere in Bozar’s newly renovated theatre. For this creation, Hassabi places a long bench along the lip of the proscenium, redefining the stage as a narrow, linear space. Along this line, five performers move through a series of meticulously composed tableaus, their bodies suspended between rest, anticipation, and observation, sustaining a continuous tension within their unfolding narrative. The bench becomes at once a support, a display, and a frame for the choreography. Facing the audience, the performers establish a parallel field of attention. Alone and together, among themselves and with the audience, they negotiate presence moment by moment. In this space, our gaze is drawn into one of the festival’s most radical forms of spectatorship, as each gesture traces a choreography of dots and signs, a sentence we are endlessly invited to compose.
