Explore the art of marbling through both traditional Western techniques and the meditative practice of Japanese suminagashi. In this immersive workshop, participants will heighten their awareness of the textures and patterns found in nature, translating observation into fluid, expressive design.
Doug will guide students through the full marbling process — from preparing the vat and mixing paints to pulling beautiful prints on paper and fabric. Along the way, we’ll discuss sustainable practices, field inquiry, and how recreating natural textures can deepen both artistic exploration and meditative practice.
In keeping with a focus on biodiversity and sustainability, we will use Alabama-sourced materials from the workshop location to explore natural dyes and regional resources.
All materials are provided. Participants will create 2–4 original 8" x 10" marbled pieces and gain a rich understanding of traditional marbling and ebru-style drawing techniques.
Please bring 8" x 10" pieces of cardboard to safely transport your artwork home.
