An inclusive Manchester Photography Collective photowalk exploring themes, connection and creativity across the city streets.
About this Event

This walk is themed around “Heat.”

Summer is here, and this month we’re exploring heat, not simply temperature, but intensity. Think of energy that feels charged, compressed, or heightened. Heat can appear in hard light, saturated colour, sharp contrast, or in the closeness between people and spaces.

On this walk, we’ll focus on photographing boldness and tension. Look for harsh sunlight carving out deep shadows, moments where contrast adds drama, and scenes that immediately command attention. Midday glare, crisp highlights, and dense blacks can all shape images that feel strong and unapologetic.

Heat can also be human. Notice physical proximity, expressive gestures, crowded streets, laughter spilling outward, or quiet exchanges loaded with intensity. Where does the city feel amplified? Where do you sense friction or momentum building?

Pay attention to extremes, how light cuts across a surface, how colour asserts itself, how contrast defines mood. When editing, consider pushing contrast, deepening shadows, and enriching colour to emphasise that intensity. Don’t be afraid to make bold tonal choices.

Use this photowalk as a chance to shoot decisively, embrace visual power, and capture the city at its most vivid and alive.

Meeting point
1:00pm — Village Hall, Deansgate Mews (Manchester City Centre)

We’ll begin with a 30-minute check-in to introduce the theme, share ideas, and reflect on what “in bloom” might look like in our individual approaches before heading out into the city.

What we’ll be shooting

  • Harsh light and defined shadow
  • Physical closeness and expressive moments
  • Strong contrast compositions
  • Bold colour and heightened visual energy

Who it’s for

All levels welcome: whether you’re shooting on a phone, compact, film, or DSLR/mirrorless. If you’re new, you’ll be looked after. If you’re experienced, come to make work and meet other photographers.

What to bring
  • Your camera/phone (and a spare battery if you have one)
  • Weather-appropriate layers (January in Manchester is cold!)
  • Optional: a small umbrella, gloves, and a warm drink

Etiquette & safety

We’ll be photographing in public spaces. Please be mindful and respectful, especially when making images involving strangers. Look out for each other, and if you need to step away at any point, that’s completely fine.
