About this Event

This walk is themed around “In Bloom.”

Spring has fully arrived, and this month we’ll be focusing on what it means to be in bloom -not just in nature, but in people, spaces, and ideas. That might be literal: flowers, colour, texture, and light. Or it might be something more human: confidence, expression, momentum, and moments where the city feels fully alive.

Look for scenes that feel expanded or flourishing. Notice colour contrasts, layered textures, and the way light enhances detail. Think beyond petals and plants, a busy café spilling onto the pavement, bold fashion choices, laughter between friends, open windows, street performers, markets in motion. Blooming can be subtle or bold, but it always carries a sense of outward energy.

You might take a conceptual approach by focusing on themes of emergence and transformation. What looks like it has come into its own? What feels fully realised? Where do you see growth, confidence, or expansion within the everyday?

Pay attention to richness in colour, warmth in light, and depth in composition. Consider how framing, focus, and layering can emphasise what is alive and expanding within your scene.

Expect a considered but energised pace, space to experiment, and the freedom to try something new, whether that’s working more boldly with colour, exploring shallow depth of field, or highlighting texture and detail. This walk is an opportunity to lean into creative expansion and let both the city and your work feel in full bloom.

Meeting point
1:00pm — Village Hall, Deansgate Mews (Manchester City Centre)

We’ll begin with a 30-minute check-in to introduce the theme, share ideas, and reflect on what “in bloom” might look like in our individual approaches before heading out into the city.

What we’ll be shooting

  • Flourishing colour and layered textures
  • Confidence and outward energy in people and places
  • Growth moments (markets, performers, open spaces, activity)
  • Details that feel alive, expressive, or expanding

Who it’s for

All levels welcome: whether you’re shooting on a phone, compact, film, or DSLR/mirrorless. If you’re new, you’ll be looked after. If you’re experienced, come to make work and meet other photographers.

What to bring
  • Your camera/phone (and a spare battery if you have one)
  • Weather-appropriate layers (January in Manchester is cold!)
  • Optional: a small umbrella, gloves, and a warm drink

Etiquette & safety

We’ll be photographing in public spaces. Please be mindful and respectful, especially when making images involving strangers. Look out for each other, and if you need to step away at any point, that’s completely fine.
