Samuel on May 30 at 1:00 p.m. for a fascinating talk exploring how Long Island evolved throughout the 20th century and largely detached itself from New York City, becoming a self-sustaining entity with its own challenges, exclusions, and triumphs. Based on his 2023 book “Making Long Island: A History of Growth and the American Dream,” Lawrence traces Long Island’s transformation over the last century, from land booms and the rise of Levittown to the promises and complexities of the American suburban dream.
