About this Event
Connery and Fan’s sound together balances the dark, resonant tones of cello with otherworldly layered vocals. Created specially for Hillside Club, this program blends material familiar to longtime listeners with new work that expands and deepens the duo’s evolving sound world. Returning to Berkeley as the home base of their collaboration since 2021, they offer a close-up performance experience designed to be felt as much as heard.

Majel Connery is a composer, performer, and roving musicologist. Her voice has been called “superb” by the New York Times and her music “thoroughly Schubertian” by the Wall Street Journal. Her voice is familiar to listeners of Radiolab and New Sounds radio, and as the host and producer of A Music of Their Own, an award-winning interview podcast on NPR. Connery has taught at UC Berkeley, Stanford and Princeton, and with Musicambia, teaching songwriting in Pr*son. She is current faculty at UNM Albuquerque, with recent residencies at Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne, and the University of Oregon.
Felix Fan has performed with Yo-Yo Ma, Gil Shaham and Janos Starker in venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Musikverein and Royal Festival Hall. Fan's interest in contemporary music has led to collaborations with today's leading composers including George Crumb, Tan Dun, Hans Werner Henze, Oliver Knussen, Kaija Saariaho and Charles Wuorinen. He appears frequently as a solo artist and with FLUX Quartet, and tours annually with Sigur Rós.
