About this Event
The cult of the Virgin Mary, superstition, exclusion from education, issues around pregnancy/birth, the restrictions imposed through marriage and conversely the freedoms and rights bestowed on widows, were among the many factors affecting how medieval women led their lives. Like all members of society, women in the middle ages were affected by religious strictures and the challenges brought on by economic hardship, plague, famine and war. Of course the greatest challenge of all was the patriarchy.
Author of A History of Scottish Witches and a biography of Mata Hari among many other books Mary W. Craig is one of Scotland’s most renowned historians and authors.
