is delighted to present a free lunchtime concert showcasing music for wind quintet, performed by Reynold Yang, Lou Grüne-Yanoff, Matthew Choy, Friso van Kuijk, and Oli Pitman.
Formed over a year ago, this dynamic wind quintet has quickly established a strong presence through performances at esteemed venues and events, including St Mary’s Abbots Church, the Royal College of Music’s Carne Room Elevenses series, and the prestigious RCM Chamber Music Festival. Under the expert guidance of Marie Lloyd, Head of Woodwind at the Royal College of Music, the ensemble has developed a refined and versatile artistic identity. Their repertoire showcases a broad stylistic range—from classical and romantic masterworks to contemporary compositions—with a particular focus on works by underrepresented and female composers. Highlights include pieces by Carl Nielsen, Jean Françaix, and a diverse selection of modern voices.

Friso van Kuijk is a Dutch musician, currently studying flute and piccolo at the royal college of music with Simon Channing and Stewart Mcwhilham.
He started out in his hometown Baarn, learning the ropes under Hannie Veenekamp. He began with small wooden transverse flutes before fully moving to the piccolo at the age of 9. He quickly developed his skills and moved to the flute at the age of 12. Over the next few years he would become a 2 time finalist at the Dutch International flute competition and First prize winner of the Dutch International Piccolo Competition. He continued his piccolo studies with Piccolo Extrordinaire Ilonka Kolthof and got invited to play in the Amsterdam Young Philharmonic orchestra to play the piccolo solo in Beethoven 6.
At 16 he was accepted into the Amsterdam Young Talent Academy and studied with Royal Concertgebouw flutists Mariya Semotyuk Schlaffke and Kersten Mccall. For his commendable studies he went on to receive the Gerda Schunck Cremer Scholarship, awarded by the Royal Concertgebouw orchestra to continue his studies.
In these years Friso performed regular international tours as flute and piccoloist in the Youth orchestra of the Netherlands, working with several renowned soloists in concert halls all over Europe.
Currently, Friso is Studying both flute and piccolo at the royal college of music, with Simon Channing, Gitte Marcusson & Stewart Mcwilham and Kathleen Stevenson respectively.
Currently Friso is advocating for more piccolo recognition doing several solo recitals all over London and setting up a Piccolo Bachelor Study in collaboration with the Royal College of Music

Matthew Choy is a 19-year-old bassoonist and conductor from Hong Kong whose passion for music has been noticeable from a young age. He is currently the Charles Richard Sisson scholar of the Royal College of Music, London, studying bassoon with Sarah Burnett and Martin Gatt, and conducting with Howard Williams.
Matthew has received awards in both national and international competitions and festivals, including multiple Hong Kong Music Festival championships, and events in Taiwan, South Korea, and New Zealand.
As an orchestral musician, Matthew has played in many youth orchestras including the Diocesan Boys’ School Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Youth Philharmonia, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra youth programme, performing under conductors such as Marin Alsop and in participated in regular national and international tours to various places such as in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Musikverein, Vienna; Smetana Hall, Prague; and Vigadó Hall, Budapest.
As a conductor, Matthew regularly assists in rehearsals and was an avid leader during his time in Diocesan Boys’ School, leading school ensembles to competitions such as the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, the World Choir Games and the Taipei International Choral Competition. He has also organised a successful concert “Reverberance” in May of 2023 featuring works by Holst, Shostakovich, and Lauridsen, to commemorate the abatement of the pandemic.
Matthew hopes to continue to advocate for the importance of music and its education, as well as ensembleship and musical expression. He will continue his work throughout Europe and Asia as he continues studies in both fields.

Reynold Yang is an emerging Chinese clarinetist, composer, and conductor whose artistic versatility and musical achievements have earned him recognition on the international stage. A passionate performer and creative voice, he is currently studying clarinet and conducting at the Royal College of Music in London under the guidance of Richard Hosford and Toby Purser, supported by the Anthony Jennings Miss Morey Scholarship and young artist supported by RZ Clarinet
Reynold has received top honors in numerous international competitions, including First Prize in the 2020 New Zealand Talented Young Artist Competition, Gold Prize in the 2022 Charleston International Contemporary Competition, and Platinum Award in the 2024 US-Canadian International Music Competition. He was also named Best Soloist with a Band and awarded Gold Medals in both solo and chamber categories at the 2023 New Zealand Concert Band Competition. Additional distinctions include the Best Under 18 Soloist at the 2023 Matamata Band Festival and multiple first-place finishes in the Clara Schumann International Competition and Virtuoso International Music Awards.
As an orchestral musician, Reynold has served as principal clarinetist of the New Zealand Secondary School Symphony Orchestra and first clarinet with the Auckland Youth Orchestra. He has performed with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra as part of their Big Play In program and was featured in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra's Young Talented Artist Showcase.
Reynold has also participated in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s conducting programs for young musicians, and has conducted numerous works across a range of styles and ensembles. These experiences reflect his growing presence on the podium and his commitment to deepening his understanding of orchestral leadership.
His dedication to musical growth has led him to take part in leading youth festivals and academies, including the KBB Honour Band and Orchestra (2022–2023) and the Akaroa Music Festival, where he served as Young Artist-in-Residence. He is also a past recipient of a scholarship from the Pettman Junior Academy, which supports gifted young musicians in Auckland and Christchurch.
In addition to his clarinet performance, Reynold is active as a composer and conductor, and continues to develop his artistry across multiple disciplines. Recognized as an official Young Artist with RZ Clarinets in the Czech Republic, he is dedicated to expanding the contemporary clarinet repertoire and bringing expressive, nuanced performances to a global audience.

Lou Grüne-Yanoff is a 19-year-old oboist studying at the Royal College of Music in London with Olivier Stankiewicz. Lou has been awarded 1st prize in numerous competitions including Stockholm International Music Competition and Bundeswettbewerb Jugend Musiziert. While studying in Stockholm with her teacher Emmanuel Laville, she was awarded a stipend for musical achievement by Lars och Ruby Ullmans stiftelse, and her chamber quartet was chosen to play in the MUBA music festival in Tallinn as part of an international Erasmus Exchange. Lou’s performances with the O/modernt chamber orchestra, Polar Star Symphony Orchestra and Stockholm Youth Symphony Orchestra have brought her to many of Swedens’ main concert halls.

Oli Pitman is a 19 year old horn player from Greater Manchester, England. As of July 2025, Oli Pitman is a first year student at the Royal College of Music studying with Simon Rayner and Timothy Jones, after having completed eight and a half years of study at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester with Julian Plummer and Richard Bourn. As a soloist, he was invited to play Mozart’s Third Horn Concerto with Buxton Musical Society orchestra in June of 2023, remaining his main solo engagement aside from masterclasses with various world-renowned hornists. Orchestrally, Oli has played alongside members of the Hallé Orchestra, as a member of the Hallé Youth Orchestra, and has been part of projects across the country and beyond with various groups such as Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra, RCM Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of North Wales. He has performed as part of ensembles in venues such as Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, and London’s Cadogan and Royal Albert Hall. He is fortunate enough to be studying at the RCM on more than a full scholarship, part of which is generously funded by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. As a chamber musician he has extensive experience with wind quintets, notably playing in a project with students from Chetham’s and Barratt-Due Musikkinstitutt in Oslo performing Ligeti wind quintet in venues in both Oslo and Manchester.
